Wounds Turning to Scars
When World War II finally came to an end, Germany was forced to take full responsibility for its actions during the war. The German government was forced to pay massive reparations to other nations, and German schools were and still are required to educate students thoroughly on the Holocaust.
Japan took no such responsibility for its actions. After the war's conclusion, a mere seven Japanese officers were put to death, and only eighteen others received any criminal sentence at all. To this day, the Rape of Nanking is publicly denied by Japanese government officials, and war criminals walk the streets of Tokyo unpunished. No reparations were paid to the families of all the victims, and the Nanking Massacre isn't even mentioned in many Japanese history textbooks. To many Chinese, this insult being added to the injury they've suffered is like a second rape, and it continues to tarnish interactions between China and Japan even today.
